A 2,650 mile charity hike...in loving memory.

April 24, 2007

I awoke today feeling good.  Ed's campsite choice (about a mile south of the Mesa Wind Station) was awesome.  We hiked out together at 8:30 a.m. which was my earliest start time to date.  That's because I wasn't cold this morning.  A sign was posted on the trail which invited hikers to stop by and say hi at the Mesa Wind Farm.  This was also a reliable water source.

Ed and I hiked up and as we were filling up our water bottles, we heard a man shout..."Get the f - - k out of here!"

The voice seemed to have come from a wind turbine.  Weird!  We waved hoping that the guy was just joking.  Or maybe, he somehow knew I peeked inside the refrigerator to find an Arizona Grapeade.  Man that looked tasty, and no I didn't help myself.

My hike today took me past Whitewater Creek where we stopped for a much needed break.  I soaked my feet and body in the refreshing stream. I cooked lunch and cameled-up for my trek northward.  Did I mention it was hot?  I hiked in 100 degree temperatures through the desert and I was parched!  After reaching our planned destination at Mission Creek, I ate dinner and re-hydrated once again.  Tonight, I am having random muscle spasms.  I plan to drink all night long and all day long tomorrow. My food supply is getting low so I'll need to ration what I do have left for 2½ days.  The heat has slowed my mileage down to 14 today.  The desert is kicking my butt but not my spirit.  Miles to date: 226
