My zero day, or day of rest, involved grocery shopping at Von's to supplement my box from Bruce, airing out my tent, sleeping bag, shoes, and eating at Thelma's Restaurant. I had two root beer floats, a turkey/cheese/avocado/sprouts pita, and fries. Ed and I must have looked ravenous because several patrons asked us if we were hiking the PCT.
Big Bear City is extremely hiker friendly. Everyone wants to hear tales and so far, my best tale is not about a wild animal but rather a weird human (see April 23 entry). Breeze hiked in today as did Berkeley Bill. Fireman and Big Daddy D hiked in yesterday. These two guys have the most entreating hitch story I've ever heard. They got a hitch with a pig and the pig managed to get into Big Daddy D's pack. I can only imagine these smelly hikers sharing the backseat with a pig!
For dinner, I grilled filet mignon and prepared a spinach salad for Ed and myself. We played a game of pool (Ed's a masterful pool player) and I packed my pack for my trek northward. If I seem to be writing a lot about food, it's because I cannot get enough and I spend a good amount of time fantasizing about it when I'm hiking. Eating well in trail towns is important to maintaining sustained energy. Miles to date: 265.3 |
