A 2,650 mile charity hike...in loving memory.

August 25, 2008

Breaking camp was a challenge with the mosquitos biting as dawn broke.

I hurried out of the stagnant pond campsite only to hike next to several more. The rain kept the bugs away, temporarily. I hiked upon what appeared to be a humongous calzone! As I squatted down on one knee to take a photo, my hallucinations were realized. The mushroom looked like a tasty treat to this hiker, but I hiked onward knowing better. My feet were soaked for the second day in a row. I spotted my first snowbank left of the trail and 30-30 said, "Come on, let's make snow angels."

I went first and was surprised by the solidity of the foot and a half high snow mound. I sat down gingerly to create my winter art. I did this very same thing outside of my sister's hospital room when she was dying. "This snow angel is for you, dear Cheryl!" 30-30 created his own angel and then we laughed about our work. His wings were distinctly shorter. The cloud cover became more and more ominous and I stayed in my gortex rain gear throughout today's hike. The Goat Mountain Wilderness took my breath away today as I watched over 100 goats roam on the mountainside. Cool! As 30-30 and I were making a camping decision, the weather turned nasty. Instantly, we were hit hard, first by rain, and then by sleet. We camped securely under pine trees and I watched ice form on the tent. It was going to be a very cold night!
