"An early morning walk is a blessing for the whole day." Henry David Thoreau
I began my hike in the brisk morning air at 9:00 a.m. I climbed from an elevation of 6,350 feet to 8,250 feet and passed up an opportunity to go to town (Wrightwood). I hiked alone most of the day but did meet up with Ed midday. I headed out alone as he was taking a lunch break. The temperatures were cool, the sun was hot, and it was breezy. I could never get comfortable. I took off and added layers all day long. I also ate extra food today. My body kept asking for more fuel as I fought the wind throughout the day.
There was one section of today's hike that was dangerous. Part of the mountain had eroded and the trail was very narrow and uneven. I took my time and stepped carefully as I dug my poles in deep. Otherwise, the tread was nice and the vistas were enchanting. I passed a ski area and considered a rest break on the ski lift.
As I was completing my 15 mile day, I hiked into Grassy Hollow Family Campground to get water. Families were having a picnic and one of the men told me I looked like I was starving. He invited me to join them and I happily accepted their kind offer. I had at least three plates of grilled beef, corn on the cob, salsa with tortillas, a Gatorade, and a Coke. They were a great family...so giving. As Bison Ed hiked up, they fed him too. We thanked them with much appreciation and hiked onward to Jackson Flat Group Campground. Tonight, Bison Ed and I were careful about using the provided bear cans. Ed pointed out the orange sunset and I tucked myself in for the night. |
